About Making Series: Anjung Part 1

Our practice is rooted in inquiry, and we are fortunate to continually explore how locally available materials can be integrated into construction through active involvement in making processes. The Anjung project, now nearing completion, extends our ongoing interest in greener materials—particularly bamboo—and their potential to reduce carbon impact within a tropical environment. We are especially focused on how such materials can replace conventional building elements without compromising contemporary expectations for durability, ease of maintenance, and comfort in living and working spaces. This approach calls for a deep commitment to a mode of practice in which design development continues well into construction, evolving in parallel with the building process. By working closely and collaboratively with on-site contractors and craftspeople, we developed a series of prototypes and full-scale mock-ups to explore the best approaches to achieving the required outcomes.
