We have been incredibly fortunate to design and build our own studio—an opportunity to explore how locally sourced, low-embodied-carbon materials can come together in forms and spaces shaped by climate-responsive design.

Conceived more than six years ago, the project only began to take shape in earnest over the last two. The process gave us first-hand experience in testing and experimenting with a range of low-carbon materials, including compressed earth blocks (CEBs), bamboo, salvaged wood and panels made from recycled food packaging. Through this exploration, we learned how these materials perform individually and collectively within an assembly designed to support contemporary ways of working and living while maintaining comfortable environmental conditions.

PS: The cats—Lulu, Kevin and Stuart—were born onsite to their mum, Mimi, in the midst of construction. Once strays, all four have since become a permanent and much-loved part of EJA.
